Why Iowa Lawmakers Need to Hear Your Opposition

NOW is the time to urge your senators to oppose HF517 - Stand Your Ground. This is legislation that would allow Iowans to shoot first, ask questions later.

Stand Your Ground explicitly states: "Reasonable force, including deadly force, may be used EVEN IF an alternative action is available."

To read the bill in its entirety, click here.

It passed out of the House and is now in the Senate.

This bill was spearheaded by Rep. Matt Windschitl (R) of Missouri Valley. He is a gun shop owner and will undoubtedly benefit financially if this careless, dangerous gun legislation is written into law.

Here's how you can help:

1. CLICK HERE to find your senator.

2. Call your senator. Call the Senate Switchboard and ask to speak to him/her or record your opposition of Stand Your Ground: (515)281-3371

3. Email your senator (while personal sentiments are preferred, see SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR EMAIL below).

4. Use social media to reach your senator (see SAMPLE MESSAGES FOR SOCIAL MEDIA/TWITTER below).

5. Contact the members of the Senate. The bill has passed out of every Republican-controlled subcommittee, committee and the full House. It now rests in the full Senate's hands before it lands on the governor's desk. (see SENATE EMAILS below).

Thank you for urging Iowa lawmakers to do the right thing and oppose this dangerous legislation.

Dear Senator XXX:

I am writing to you with concerns about HF517.

Stand Your Ground is not about self-defense. It is a bill rooted in racism and fear and allows people to shoot first, ask questions later.

I believe there is a balance between our constitutional right to bear arms and prioritizing the safety of people within our state. This legislation will NOT make Iowans safer.

In fact, studies show "Stand Your Ground" laws actually lead to more deaths.

Here is a link to an in-depth study at Texas A&M that concludes these types of laws "do not deter burglary, robbery, or aggravated assault, rather they lead to a statistically significant 8 percent net increase in the number of reported murders and non-negligent manslaughters."

As a fellow Iowan, I am asking you to do the right thing and keep Iowa a safe place for families to live. Please OPPOSE HF517.
